Assistance League® of Whittier is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that puts caring and commitment into action through philanthropic programs in the Great Whittier Area.  Member volunteers are dedicated to ongoing support and a long-term presence in the community through hands-on involvement and innovative philanthropic programs.

In 1950 the Whittier community had no service, guidance, or assistance organizations. By May 1952, eight women met to explore a future club.  In the following months, eight more friends joined the group, and they created an organization called Whittier League.  Knowing the record of the National Assistance League for high standards of community service,  the Whittier women discussed the needs of the area with officers of the national organization and decided to qualify as a chapter.  In September 1953, Whittier League became a probationary chapter; then received their official charter in 1954.  There are 120 Assistance League chapters in 26 states with 22,000 members.  Assistance League chapters returned over $57.9 million to local communities across the country , invested 3.5 million service hours and served 1.56 million people.

Assistance League® of Whittier currently has 52 active members and volunteers working to make the Greater Whittier Area a better place to live and work through our programs. Assistance League® of Whittier supports eleven community-based philanthropic programs benefiting infants and adults in the Greater Whittier Area.  In 2022-2023, our dedicated members volunteered over 9,200 hours.  We encourage you to learn more about our chapter and how you can become involved and make a difference.

Our primary funding source is our two Thrift Shops on 6339 S Greenleaf Ave in Whittier.  The shops are staffed and managed entirely by our member volunteers. Donations are always welcome and are tax-deductible.

Other funding sources include corporate and private foundation grants and individual donations.
