Started in 2004, the Summer Reading Program funds the Whittier Public Library to help promote literacy and the love of reading in children. The library plans the Summer Reading Club’s themes, requirements, games, and activities. Assistance League® committee members assist library staff and attend special events throughout the summer, such as a ventriloquist, an animal magician, and a puppet show. Committee members assist with the activities and booth at the summer-end picnic event at Parnell Park in Whittier. The committee wrapped hot dogs for this event. Over 2,000 participants read more than 20,000 books in the Summer Reading Program of 2023-2024.

Assistance League® of Whittier also donated $8,000 to the summer reading program to provide entertainment, activities and supplies for over 900 participants.
